Tooth Fairy

Rainy nights were the worst part of this gig. Silk tights didn’t protect legs from the scratches of crinoline when you were soaked to the bone and the weight of your skirts makes it stick to your legs and scratch.

It doesn’t help that you need to wait until all the house lights are out making sure that everyone has gone to bed. The magic didn’t work well enough to make your footfall silent or hide the sound of the crinoline.

When she chose this from the jobs she was offered after her transcendence she has expect magic to make her small, able to fly through windows and easily extract the tooth from under the pillow. Just like the stories that she had heard as a child before she even knew about transcendence.

That is not the case. Now that the lights are out she can tiptoe to the door with an arcane utterance that took her days to learn to pronounce the door opened quietly.  Once through the door it shut behind her. Another utterance and she would be dry she needed to concentrate as it was a more difficult word and she often said it too loudly to compensate for her unease with it. It came out as “grumph” and nothing happened. She shivered with the damp and hoped that the puddle that was forming beneath her would clear up with the last bit of magic she would do to erase all traces of her in the house other than the kids room. She took out a small glowing orb from her glittery satchel. It was dry. She had worried as the last time it got wet it lead her to every tooth in the house weather it was still in a mouth or a pair of grandma’s dentures soaking in a cup on the back of the toilet.

She unlaced her glittery high tops so that she could walk quietly through the house without the squish squish coming from of the wet shoes to wake the family. Once she stood up the stone glowed blue and felt icy to her touch. At first this silent game of hot or cold with a rock was fun. Now it was trying, arrows would be so much better.  She began to slowly walk toward the stairs hearing the rhythmic breathing of people upstairs asleep. It was nice to walk bare foot on carpet. In the trancendants village there was no carpet in any of the houses. She had been told that it was “an unnecessary luxury for people who would be staying for a short term”.  She had been there for 5 years and many others had been there much longer.

As she wandered toward the back of the house the stone in her hand began to slowly warm in her hands begining to change from blue to purple.

Note: I wrote this more than a year ago and I just came across it and I still like it it seems though I did not post it. Since the little boy just lost his second tooth it seemed like a good time. -V

Problem geeky parenting

Both of my children have been brought up on legos. Much of our legos are star wars legos.

Img_3922_2

After the gifts are opened for birthdays and christmases it is time to assemble the latest lego set. But that is not the problem.

You see some where along the line we taught our youngest that after assembly, disassembly was possible. Rarely have our lego sets remained together.

Img_0752

And now all plastic things that are assembled coming out of the box are believed to be things that can be taken apart as well. I just pray that the constant mantra of not all things are meant to come apart after you put them together will sink in before he breaks something really nice.

a snippet

When she passed him at other times he would allow him self a small small while his eyes danced and he would open his eyes more widely and slightly raise his eyebrows. This small quick expression spoke of a lust and desire that would make her heart skip a beat and once made her stumble.

Sad Fan Girl

When I was a little girl I sat down to watch a TV show. I was in England.

There was a man in an incredible long scarf and a cheeky woman and a robot dog. I was besotted.

The was the throbbing wooshes and the phone box would appear and another adventure would begin.

I was so exited when they brought it back 5 years ago. A new face a new companion, and then another face and there suddenly was Sarah Jane as Cheeky as ever only a little older a little more mature and she still had the robot dog It may have been one episode but then it wasn't She got her own show. She acquired a son and ran around saved the earth from aliens.

I hear a fifth season was planned.

It won't happen now.

Sarah jane will be missed
So will Elizabeth her alter ego.

Eyelash

For years she had done this little trick and it had worked but she was out of practice.

Things had gotten busy and she had stopped looking in the mirror for the stray eyelash on her cheek. She had even stopped gently plucking them off her children’s cheeks when she saw them. All it was was making a wish a simple wish. So why was she still standing her afraid to breath afraid to blow this little crescent of hair off her finger.

Wishes weren’t real and the ones she wanted couldn’t be granted. So what would be the harm. If she wished for them to come back they couldn’t and wouldn’t she couldn’t ever change their departure, gone for ever. The note on the chart from the doctor only confirmed what she had know for a long time, it was part of him it always had been. She couldn't turn back the time the age on her face would on grow, surgery or not she was getting older they all were.

One dark slender curve delicately balanced on her finger one blow and one wish. She felt a sharp intake of breath and she knew what she needed. With a rush of air from her lips the lash flew away and was lost. Her heart brimmed with hope and a smile crept on to her face. It felt as if it may work again even just for a little while.

Loss and love

The first word that just came to mind were “fuck a duck”

Well at least it rhymes.

I know I am blathering some coherent some nice prose. In days to come it will get better

My eyes are more red and puffy than they have been because of my cold, they have now been further exasperated by sobbing and wiping the tears away.

I keep finding myself holding my breath, I don’t think it is intentional and I know I need to remember to breath but every so off I feel it catch hard. It is kind of a shock and I remember why and cry again. It is not a cry I have felt before today. It is hard soul wrenching.

So much is caught up in this. Love and hope that are now lost. Future plans never to be made.

Worst of all having to be the one to call or write to others to tell them, The silence the anger the tears, none of it and all of it directed at me. My words have helped to break some hearts but it really is not fault of my own. They know I am as hurt as they are but it really doesn’t help.

While I wait for it to get better I clean and I hug my family.

Day 17...

Sorry I am pissy about all of this.

Today I spent a lot of time at my computer. I was watching things unfold in Madison, filled with the pride at thoes who stand up for their rights, guilt because I was home sucking on my own mini-crisis instead of being with them and horrified at the indifference the people that have pledged to up hold the state looks at them.

The whole time I knit or fought the cat over computer cords and knitting needles. So I finished one coaster, made a temporary anti cat cord protection system (Ok that is a year holder/trainer that I called into service)
Tonight I took my pictures. We are foggy tonight. I hope that comes through in the pictures it is a blanket that covers us making all quiet.

My kids are off school tomorrow. We will make some signs to support their teachers and nurses our garbage men and our snow plow drivers....

Day 15

It has become a bit scary in wisconsin as of late. If you search for Wisconsin in the News you may see pictures of protest rallies and our Governor and what is going on hear. It is not good. I really wanted to be at the protests today. If I can fix my mood I will tomorrow.

Any way I did write my legislators today so that is my major thing I slo started a new coster late tonight and will probably finish it before Craig Ferguson is over but I wnated to post before things got away from me today.

So a picture of the letter, 2 Pictures of my view out my front door and the coster in progress.

Days 12, 13, and 14…A bit late....

My back is in pain and this weekend seem to become a wash of nothingness pretty fast. I felt a lot of “I got up what more do you want from me.”

I did finish the dishcloth I started on Friday,

I also started a coster on Sunday

On Saturday night My husband and II made up a fish recipe.

I am usually a bit reluctant to mess with written recipes for fish. I didn’t want to go shopping nor did I want to order in. So I used what we had in the house. I didn’t think about it until the dishes were licked clean that it could be my thing.

But I have a recipe from my head:

1 lb white fish in fillets (tilapia is best)
3-4 T Olive Oil
1 can artichoke hearts
1 Roma tomato
1 tsp Basil
1 tsp marjoram
1 tsp Garlic powder
Salt and Pepper to taste

  1. Drizzle 1-2 T of oil on bottom of 13x9 glass baking dish.
  2. Place Fish in single layer on top of oil
  3. Drain artichoke hearts and top fish
  4. Cut tomato in to wedges (about 8) and top fish
  5. Drizzle 1-2 T of oil on fish and vegetables
  6. Sprinkle with seasonings and cover dish with foil.
  7. Bake in 400 degree oven until flaky 12-20 minutes.
  8. Serve with a fresh baked bread.

Yummy

Today is Valentines day I manufacture a good mood and it worked. My son and daughter made me gifts in some odd selfish ways I have a connection to these things since I made my kids.

So here is the picture out my front door and that of what I made and took pictures of and  what my kids made for me.

Day 9 - lights

I have climbed into bed haven finished the day.

I have a friend who is an artist. She always has been but many years ago she got an MFA. She lives a creative life some might call it bohemian. We have not lived in the same stae since we were 16 and that was a long time ago.

She has started blogging and sharing some of her artistic endeavors. Some entries come as instructional  recycled crafts. Today I decided to try one. I didn't find my hole punch (at least the one I would use on this project) you can find my friend, Holly's directions at http://thelemongrove.blogspot.com/2011/01/reuse-project-1-aluminum-can-stuff.html

They are aluminum can candle holders. I made one, my attempt can be seen in two of these pictures.

I did finish the dishcloth from yesterday. It reminds me of a granny square. And I am not sure if I like how it turned out. I am going to try the pattern again, later.

And I did take my daily night shot of the view out my front door I caught a car on one and feeling self conscious I moved the camera.  I like the movement in light in it, so you get two again tonight.

Day 8 - of knitting and the frozen tundra of love

It is 1 degree out as I write this, I won't even look up the wind chill. I still went out in my socks with out a coat to snap this picture. The snow doesn't seem as high but it is not solid ice. I stepped in a drift that was knee deep today.

Between daily life that happened I knitted some I am working through some patterns from www.tricksyknitter.com. This has been the toughest one yet. I ma using some techniques and elements that I have not used before. I had to watch some videos on line It is going OK but I have lost count more than once. I am hoping that once I do this at least twice I can make the scarf I bought a pattern for. But maybe not this month.

The other thing I did was write a quick piece on Love....a special kind of love. check it out over at http://vickiswritingbetaplace.blogspot.com/2011/02/love.html

Goonight!

Love

I hadn’t see her in a long time. As small children we ran naked in the ocean in the winter, ran bare foot through the neighborhood.
Even after I moved we played hard and it was my little sister who at two almost burned down her parents wonderful bohemian bungalow.
As teenagers we grew in our separate worlds we lived sixty miles apart but when we were together we told each other everything. I was a quite and awkward child she had a large group of friend they surfed and were private school kids, She live in a very affluent area the parties were huge. Spending time with her was all I cared to do. It was in 1984 that we were really separated. I left the country with my family.

In 1997 I was coming home and a visit with her and her family was important. I was bringing my husband home to meet my western friends and family. We sat draped around each other whispering and asking opinions and advice catching up although the years seem not to dull our friendship.

As we got ready to leave, I turned to her and asked if she would like a name sake. She blanked and then a tear seeped out of her eyes.  We weren’t to talk again for seven years

A year later her name sake was born.  I knew that this was mine to keep this one would always be close even when she was turned off by me she was mine and I only had the love of my life to share her with for now.

Day 6 - Green and Gold FTW

Today was all about green and gold.
I live in Wisconsin and although I am not generally a football fan the Pack are a way of life here. So we gathered for food and fun before watching the game. So I started a dish cloth. It is a bit smaller than my others and I had it finished but the end of half time.

We got home and I took my nightly picture. There was some melting today as well as a new Inch of snow. I haven't noticed much in the size of out pile.

New obsession

I found these pictures on my camera tonight. Since I had last up loaded pictures just last night I can only assume that they were taken some time today. My son has been watching his"videos" on my iPod touch a lot recently, all most daily.

" Now the nightmare's real........and I won't feel a thing"

Day 5 - Another cloth finished and still snowy

I changed the view from my front door a bit. still the same look just a different orientation. I also notices an interesting shape on the corner and took a closer shot. I really should take a walk around the neighbor hood to get some good pictures in the light. So three pictures for you tonight.

So I finished the second dish cloth I really like the texture the pattern and the variegation of the yarn created. I am hoping for green and gold tomorrow striped will be nice.

I added another few rows to the weaving and I have decided that I need a comb and/or a rigid heddle to get the results I like I want. I will keep going but I will be looking for these items.

Day 4 - TAD 2011

With the snow still on the ground I took more pictures to night. There is a new mound on out front lawn. The city went about the neighborhood and push mounds of snow on to various lawns. I could not figure out a pattern or a reason (It was not storm drains they didn't get a one.)

I did get around to doing a bit more of my weaving tonight. I am not as pleased with it As I would like. I find that I must be creating too much tension on the weft pulling the warp into this hour glass shape. I can think of things that may help but I don't have the patience or the equipment.

I have also started a second dish clothes. I think it is about half finished. I am likeing the pattern it is simple and is giving it a nice texture.

I need to get some "green and gold" yarn tomorrow so that I can knit an appropriate dish cloth during the game on Sunday.

Day 3 One item completely finished...

I am continuing to add a picture or two taken between 10 and 11 PM of the view out side my house from the front door. Two tonight with different lighting.

I finished the knitted dish cloth it is bigger than I thought it would be but I am please with it. It got me to practice increases and decreases. I have a few more patterns to try for dish clothes. I am exited about them. I like utilitarian knitting.

Did you miss my day 2?
