The Penultimate November post.

*Penultimate is one of my fathers and my husbands favorite words...last but one. That is what is left in November for days of writing. this happens right after the second part I posted.*

As I drift off I hear the quiet tinkle of the bells on the cats collar and feel the bounce in the bed as one cat then another jumps up to join us. The crowdedness of the bed only increases the warmth and coziness of the room. I fee l sleep pulling on my consciousness and the heavy breathing of Justin and the sweet sighs of Helen make sleep more welcome. Soon the warm encompassing darkness of sleep takes me.

Suddenly, I find myself standing by below the window to the bathroom.  The room is bright and fileled with noon time sun. A woman is sitting on the toilet crying softly saying to me “He says he want you too but why can’t I have you. I don’t understand what am I doing wrong? Tell me how to do it.” I step over to her and look up at her rear streaked face. Her eyes are puffy and red. She looks very tired and worn. Although I know she is beautiful and young she seems old to me. She is mine and I will do anything I can for her she gave me life

“I don’t know Mommy” comes a voice from me. It is airy and unearthly not mine but from me. As suddenly as I arrived I feel ripped away and I am laying awake in Helen’s bed the cats, Justin and Helen where they were when I fell asleep. My heart is beating rapidly. I take some deliberate deep breaths to calm myself. I keep repeating to myself “it was only a dream” I feel oddly shaken by this dream. I need to prove to my self there was nothing to this.

My mouth is dry, as is the usual state of things when I wake up in the middle of the night. So there is nothing else to do but get a drink of water and the closest place is the bathroom that I was just in in my dream. I slowly sit up disengaging my arm from under Helen’s head without disturbing her, and getting my feet out from under the cat without encouraging them to move into my warm vacated spot.

November is coming quickly to a close.

*Good News We didn't burn the pizza! this with a little editing will link up with the second part. The bad news is I don't currently have an idea of where to go next...I have started the ending and there is a huge gap I think in-between, I think. After editing day I will post all that I have*

I sit and put my legs up on the couch my knee is stiff but not sore and i am grateful. The next few days would be hard with me not being able to walk well. I want things to go well for our first week in our house. I want to be able to make this ours. Helen’s laughter erupts and I snap out of my thoughts to see her feeding her dad with an empty plastic spoon. She is giggling as he makes it difficult for her to get it in his mouth. It reminds me so of how she was so desperate to eat that we could not get the spoon in fast enough. I have a pang of longing for that time when she was so very little. This is as fun and her conversations and play is just as engaging but a sibling for our inquisitive and curious child would be wonderful.

I smell the pizza and jump to my feet how long has it been since i put it in. I half run to the kitchen afraid to burn the pizza. I open the oven and see that the pizza seems to be done to perfection. I look around for the pot holders or a towel and see nothing. “Justin I need to get the pizza out and we don’t have the oven mitts out” I call toward the living room. I leave the oven door open and begin to look at the boxes seeing if any of them say that the pot holders or kitchen towels are in there. I don’t find anything.

Justin comes in with Helen following. He looks quickly around and noticing the heat coming from the open oven and the pizza that has continued to brown he whips off his t’shirt and uses it to pull the pizza from the oven and slide it on to the counter.

Helen laughs and claps to see him do this and he adds a floursh as he kicks the oven door closed with his heel.

“Bravo! My darling Justin to the rescue again.” I say with a giggle and slide my hands appreciatively around his bare waist. I give his sholder a quick kiss.

“So Helen, where do you think the pizza cutter is?” I ask her with a slight giggle.
Helen cocks her head and looks at the boxes. “It’s not here mommy she says. These aren’t the right boxes to cook with.”

I look at the boxes my self and the one that are stacked there are all dishes and cook books none of the pots and pans or the gooking gear is in these boxes.

“Justin, she’s right, I thought I saw them here before, Where did they go.” I ask more to myself than to anyone.
“I thought so too.” says Justin

“Well, this mystery will have to wait. I know we have scissors and there are paper towels that is all we need.” I fetch the scissors that I saw in the Den and we cut the Pizza and picnic with it in the living room.

Here is the next few paragraphs.

*I spent 2 evenings working on the end. Not ready to show that to you yet but today I got closer to the pizza, not too interesting but a little character bit on Justin."

I scoop her up. “I am s sorry someone did that.”
“What did they do?” Asks Justin looking out the window.
“The broke my leaf man, daddy” whines Helen.

I can see that it registers and in his shoulders tension builds, but with a big breath he disperses the tension. “I am sorry sweetie, sometimes people do mean things, and sometimes they don’t even know they are mean” He steps over to us and puts his arm around me and strokes Helen’s head.  I can tell he wants this to have not happened.
“Sweetie, how about we cook some pizza?” He is moving us on.  Keeping us from thinking too long about who took it apart. Moving on is a good thing it has been a long day.
In the kitchen He is standing at the stove looking at the oven. “How do you think this works he asks. I look in the cupboard around the kitchen a few have our stuff in them the rest are bare. I hand Helen some plactic dished it play with.
“Well until we have internet connection and can look up the instruction book on
line. We will have to wing it.” I say. Justin laughs. We look at the controls, we begin to experiment with different ways of turning it on. Eventually I hear the tell tale whoosh and pop of the gas oven turning on. Three red numbers light up indicating 100. I assume that that is the temperature and I stand back. “Ok we have it on. Lets see what happens next”. Justin pulls a padded stool over for me to sit on. I sit and watch the numbers slowly count up. When the numbers 450 there is a beep and I unwrap and put the oven in. I look at the clock and make a note of the time and walk into the living room. I stant in the arched entry way between the dining room and living watching Helen serve her daddy invisible food on the plastic plates.

*So for 3 days now I have been trying to get them to put the pizza in the oven. tonight I don't have much n me and Iwas stuck for a while I made a little more head way but just a little. I reworked this a few times and it is still a mess. So it is time to stop and let you take a look*

She turns back to the windows and I follow her gaze into our back yard in the early stages if twilight. A slight grey has crept into the quality of light.
“What do you mean Honey?” Asks Justin from Behind me. But I can see. The leaf and twig “picture” that she made earlier has been disassembled and sorted in to piles of similarly shaped leaves sticks and twigs. It is all very neat and again it is not moving.
“Look” I say, pointing out the window. “I wonder who did that?”
“Why did they do that Mommy?” I can hear both wonder and hurt in her voice.

Finally found a good place to stop wrting tonight.

*Here all I was trying to do was get them to get Dinner and the uncooked pizza is still sitting on the stove*
I have hardly slept when the door opens and a screeching cat flies into the room and on to the bed waking both me and Helen. Helen immediately begins to cry and I scoop her into my arms. My heart is pounding as the second cat flies in knocking into the stack of boxes and then under the bed.
“Justin! Why did you open the door?” I yell. I am remorseful for this as it makes Helen cry harder. “Oh sweetie it’s Ok, The cats are just being a bit nuts in the new house. They would wake anyone with that racket but I bet it is time to get up anyway.” I stroke Helen’s hair as she cries into my shoulder. After a minute or two she begins to sniff back her tears. I hug her and swing my legs over the edge of the bed.
“You called?” Justin says sticking his head in the door way.
“Well, the cats opened the door and woke us up badly slamming through the door. Why did you open it?” I ask as calmly and as matter-of-factly as I can.
“I didn’t, I just got back with the cats and a take and bake pizza I figured you two would be hungry I was trying to figure out the oven when I heard you yell.”
“Well, maybe I didn't latch it well. I am sorry.”
“Thats OK I would have thought the same thing.”

As my feet hit the floor I hear the cats hiss from under the bed. It makes me start and Helen lifts her head suddenly and slams it into my ear hard enough to make me gasp. She starts to whimper again.
“Its OK that was all just very surprising sweetie. Are you OK?”
“I think I got scared, Mommy.” I hug her tight as I stand up carefully testing my knee and hoping that the cats won’t swipe. There is only a dull throb from my knee letting me know that I hurt it but that it wont’ give out, yet.
We head out into the Hallway and find Justin coming out of the bathroom.
“The cats managed to spill thei litter box already. I put it behind the toilet. Seems to be the perfect spot. Somehow they managed to upend it and dump the liter all over the floor behind the toilet.” He said. Standing and listening to him my knee begins to hurt. I lean against the wall. The wall is icy cold. I rebalance Helen who is clinging to me as she does when she is tired.
“Well they are obviously in a snit or something because of the mood. Probally took issue with the litter box for some unexplainable cat reason.”
“Yeah I know”
“This wall is way too cold. Let go Down stairs. Helen can Daddy carry you. Please dear”
“Yes” they both say with a great deal of happiness. we all head down stairs together.
The Staris are polished with a oriental style runner held down by thing brass rods. It is more autentaious than I would have chosen but I like it all the same. It add a bit of elegance to the somewhat casual entryway.

We walked down the hall and into the kitchen. The Pizza looked large on the top of the stove. There were a few boxes open around the kitchen. One was even empty.
“Yeah and empty box!”
“Do remember what Box has the Pizza Cutter or the kitchen sheers?”
“Not off the top of my head but at least one of those is listed on the where am I important sheet. I think it is on top of the boxes in Helen’s room” My back is to him as I say this and I hear him leave the room and head up stairs. I look at the writing on the empty box, it says plates and bowls, I look around for the silverware box. Of course it is at the bottom.
“Helen Sweetie do you want to help Mommy?” I ask. I turn around when she does not respond. She is not in the kitchen. “Helen, where are you sweetie?” silence greets me. I look into the Hallways and the Dining room since I can see them without taking a step. I don’t see her. “Helen!” I call out louder trying to keep my voice happy not to sound anxious or angry. I walk into Dining room and it is empty only the chairs, Table and empty china cabinet.

I walk through the equally empty Living room. And into the entry way and to the bottom of the stairs. “Helen!” I call again. Feeling a little of that mother’s fear drifting into my voice and chest. Still silence. “Justin!” I call loudly. He rounds the corner and steps into view at the top of the stairs with such timing to my growing worry that I jump. “Is Helen with you?”
“No I left her in the kitchen with you.”
“She seems to have wandered off. I am not used to having this big a place to try and find her in.”
The responds as he comes down the stairs. “I’ll go through the living room and you go the other way and we will meet in the Den.”
“OK sounds good.” I am moving on my assigned path before I finish speaking. I walk back down the hallway we walked dow just a few minutes ago and through the kitchen a down the hall towards the Den. I stop and look in the mud room bathroom to find it empty. As is the Mud room. I walk into the Den where many of the Boxes are. It has become a Maze in here. We will need to Move these and empty these.  Once I can see all of the French Doors I see Helen standing by them. She is standing very still with her head cocked to one side, in either deep thought or concentration. Helen sweetie I was looking for you.”
She whirls around and looks at me startled. “Sorry Mommy, I was looking out side. Something happened out there”

* I have written more than this today but I am leaving you with this short bit as I feel you need to have more to read tomorrow and this is too sweet for to be saddled with the awkard stopping place the rest is at*

I follow him out of the room and then I go into Helen’s room. As I shut the door behind me I see Helen in her classic sleeping position knees tucked under her and butt in the air. My mother always told me I slept like this. To me because of her strong resemblance of her father with her fair skin, eyes and hair, I take this as a strong indication of my genes in her. She is really sound asleep I am frequently amazed at how fast she falls asleep some times. I have never had that ability.
I lay down next to her and curl around her. Her even breathing and warm sweet breath are relaxing to me I find the sound of her sleep are soothing and I can melt into the mattress. The room is comfortable warm and I can hear the movers moving things into the room below shifting the boxes and making things work. I am glad for the floor plan and the work we did on paper I know that It will be as we planned. Unpacking can wait. Sleep is needed. I hear movement in the hall way as sleep takes me and I wonder what needed to come up stairs, but the peacefulness of a sleeping child gives me the peace I need to fall asleep.

*I think I missed writing a paragraph here but there is the next part.*

I open the suitcase and find on top of everything my favorite grey sweats. Thinking of the promised nap and the obvious stress the day has brought on myself this seems to be the perfect choice. I strip off my wet jeans and turtleneck. And the warmth of the soft sweats are more welcome than I Imagine. My knee is puffing up a bit obviously not a simple bruise but I don’t think it is quite bad enough for a visit to the doctor today. I promise myself I’ll go tomorrow if it still hurts. There is a knock at the door. “I’m comming in Hon” says Justin through the door. He slowly opens the door and comes in with the first aid kit. “Let’s see that knee.” he says
I sit down on the edge of the bed and he sits next to me. I gingerly scoot the cuff elastic of my pants over my knee involuntary sucking in breath as my fingernail push into the puffiness of the swelling.
“Well, that isn’t going to be pretty.” says Justin as I hear the slight pop of the ice pack as he squeezes it to activate it. He looks at my knee and then meets my eyes. He hands me the ice pack. “Here you put this on I don’t want to make it hut more. And you should lay down with Helen she is curled up in her quilt and sleeping on her bed.”
“Wow she fell asleep fast and Yeah I’ll join her I could use a little nap.”
“The movers will be gone soon. They just need to Bring in the couches and the dinging room table. After they are gone I’ll go get the cats. I think they have had enough time at the vets.” He stands takes my chin in his hand and kisses me. Thw warmth of his kiss is reassuring and calming. “Moving has always been stressful for you. We have finally bought a house. Lets never move again.”
“Sounds good to me. I love you.”
“I know,” he replies with the wink that means so much.

*Soon I will be finished linking it all together*
After finishing in the bathroom Helen and I headed to her room her bed was put together. A full size bed that seemed to high off the floor for such a little girl. But is was the perfect princess bed for her. The dark wood of the four poster was in stark contrast to the pale green of the four swaths of fabric that connected them close to the ceiling. She did not want a canopy but she wanted a sky blue ceiling. We were planning to paint her room in the next week it was top of our list.

The box full of blankets was unopened and of course at the bottom of the high stack of boxes. In the hallway I had just passed the linen closet box and I put the extra fleece blankets in there.
“Lets use the extra blankets to make a nest on you bed sweetie”
“That sounds like fun Mommy and another good idea. You have lots of good ideas Mommy”
“I sure do sweetie, that’s what Mommies are for.” I reply chuckling.
As i walk into the hallway I hear water running from that bathroom. I by pass the box and head into the bathroom to see the toilet just beginning to over flow bowl. I scream with frustration and dart toward it banging my knee on the toilet with a loud crack. I manage to turn the water off and notice a whole roll of toilet paper seems to have fallen into the bowl plugging it.  I reach in to grab it sloshing water al over my clothes.
I feel the tears welling in my eyes from the pain in my knee as the water rushes out.
“Are you OK, Hon?” comes my husband’s voice from behind me.

I start to sob audibly. My shoulder shaking and tears falling down my front. The pain has exacerbated the exhaustion that had me crying before. I’ll get some towels from the box in the hall and I thin we need a trash can in here. I need an ice pack to I say. There is an instant one in the first aid kit by the front door.
As he goes to get those things I limp to the master bed room where I think I saw them take one of the suit cases with my clothes.
Passing Helen’s room I hear her singing to her self. “I’ll be ready in a minute sweetie.” I say loudly towards her open door. There is no reply but that is not unusual.

More of the same story

*I think I might be a bit too tired of brain to write too meat right now. just bit of fluff to bridge*

I pull the first aid kit out of the car. I look ay Rick’s cut it is not bad just a small slice clean and bleeding a normal size bandage does the job.
“So do you usually get to move people in to houses that slam their own door and break windows” It is such a silly question that I feel my self blushing when it finished coming out of my mouth. Rick Laughs loudly in a gafaw that is very much associated with working class men.
“Mommy I need to go potty” Helen’s voice comes from closer than I suspect. She has walked down the steps and is now standing on the curb behind the truck.
“Stay right there sweetie” I say louder than I mean too.  I run across the street and scoop her up. And run up the step to the door. Suddenly I am afraid that the door will be locked. I take a deep breath and grab the door handle. It sticks then clicks open with ease. I sigh loudly and fell some of the stress as good as it has been shake through my body.
“Are you Ok Mommy?”
“Yes sweetie I am just tired.” I remember my plan for a nap and think it is time.”After you go potty shall we take a Nap sweetie?”
“That is a good idea Mommy”
I laugh at her assurance. And head up stairs to the bathroom. The sun is shining through the bare window giving the blue and white room a brightness that almost blinding.

About 3 minutes of the ghost story...If that.

*A quck reminder. The French doors have just slammed and a windo pane has broken. Again this was written quickly with out much editing.*

Everyone jumps. I drop my mug and the warm brown liquid seems to shatter with the ceramic and makes a jagged circle splashing every where and drenching my shoes.

I stare at my feet and the wet floor. My exhaustion bubbles to the surface and the tears spring suddenly from my eyes too fast for a normal reaction. As suddenly as this all happens My husband and one of the movers run to the french door in the adjacent room. One of the movers seems to drop into a squat as fast as I do to start picking up the broken pieces of ceramic and rick scoops up Helen and sets her on the counter.
“stay here sweetie until we get all the sharp broken stuff that can hurt you picked up”
“I’ll be OK moving guy” she says brightly crossing her legs like a pretzel.

Somehow I find a rag and clean up the liquid before it becomes a dry and sticky mess the broom and mop are easy to find. I look at Helen happily sitting happily watching us. As soon as I get the kitchen done I decide that Helen and I need a nap. He bed was the first piece of furniture off the truck It is set up and there are blankets handy.  I scoop her up and go to the back room they have found the vacuum and picked up the largest shard. Rick has a cut and has a paper towel wrapped around it.
I know this will delay the nap but they have all been so helpful I feel I must help him.
“Rick I have a first aid kit in the car I can get that fixed up fast.”
We head outside to the car. I set Helen on the top step and walk with rick down the path.
“Well, I guess we just had proof why they have called this place Wind Point.” Rick says.
I laugh hard. This was not what i had expected to hear.

Back to the ghost story...

*You may see that the daughter now has a name she is Helen. Other than Rick the moving guy I haven't named any one else. Ideas are welcome*
*DISCLAIMER I wrote this in 15 minutes I didn't do much in the way of proofreading the most editing work I did was choosing the last word.*

“Sure sweetheart. I’ll get the top one and you get the bottom one.” The deadbolt at my eye level turns easily and i help my daughter open the bottom by holding her hand in mine. It is stiff to turn although I cannot tell if that is because I ant to be more gentle with helen small ahnd under mine or if it is really stiff. “I guess we will have to get your key looked at, hon.” I say looking at my husband.
“Ok we are In!” he says as he puts a box in front of the screen door to keep it from closing and fishes a wooden door stop from the bag he has set by the door to keep the inner door open. I remember this door stop from college. It saved my fingers from his heavy dorm room door on more than one occasion.

I hurry Helen to the back yard and open the french doors wide so I can hear her if she needs me. I position my self so I can direct the flow of traffic to the correct rooms and watch her play outside. The Day is getting warmer and I sense that spring might actually come early this year.

After an hour of directing traffic I have dug up the tea kettle mugs and the instant hot beverages. I have also discovered that we indeed got the ice maker working yesterday and we have ice and soda for anyone who need it. I call for a break and get Helen to come inside. She has collected sticks and leaves and created a picture of a person on the ground outside. despite the breeze it seem to be staying put.

As the moving men and my family settle in for a drink break. Quite settle over the house I had not realized the level of noise there had been.
“Ma’am” rick starts “I think we only have about an hour left.” Before we have everything in and unwrapped.”
“That is really great” I say and then as if on cue the french doors slam in the adjacent room and we hear glass break as one of the windows does not survive the shock.

2 of 2 things I wrote today.

*from the ghost story picking up from where the little girl is excited to see the house, Moving Guys and her daddy from the car*

I park leaving moving space for the van. By the time I get out Helen has managed to get her self out of her car seat and is bouncing on the seat next to it. She is still short enough that she can stand upright on the car’s seats. As she ducks her head to get out I marvel at how little time she has left before she leaves all of her preschool things behind. She is growing so fast.

“Oh, Good you are here!” I here my husband calls as he approaches us. He seems a bit worried. I look at him questioningly. He comes up picks Helen up. “It seems my keys don’t want to work. I am hoping that you have the deed with you and your keys will work so we don’t have to call a locksmith.”
“OK, I think I have all the papers. If not they are in the blur file box that was near the apartment door.” I say informationally as I walk towards the house. I pull my keys from my pocket. I can’t remember whose keys we used yesterday. I look at them. They are very new. If there is any wear on them I cannot see it. Walking up the Stine and Brick path way I feel nervous and exited as I will be unlocking the door to my house with an audience.
“Mommy can I help?” Helen asks as I put the first key into the dead bolt.

Ninja part 5 (1 of 2 posts for 11/16)

*The next installment. One of 2 things I wrote today*

“My father sent for me?” Jane repeats hardly able to grasp the pieces of the puzzle. She is on a ship going to New Zealand and her father was the one who sent for her. In a way he abducted her. Sending those strange chinamen to grab her.

“You have a bag, Katsuo san got it for you.” She is pointing to the cot behind Jan Jane looks at the cot and when she hears giggling she looks under it. There is a large leather case with straps and a handle under the cot. She pulls it out and finds that it is heavy. The weight of the case the close quarters of the room and the rocking of the ship cause her to fall again. This time she falls into her new companion.

Jane begins to laugh and tries to stop. She cannot hold the laughter in. She attempts to slide on to the cot next to her companion, and topples off landing back on the floor. She is laughing hard into her hand  tears stemming from everything she has happened her laughter dissolves in to sobbing she curls up tucking her skirt around her and hugging her knees. It seems like several minutes before she can regain her breath and open her eyes.

Her companion has moved to the floor and is sitting next to her. With an expression of concern on her face.

“Are you hurt?”
“No No not really, well my hands are grazed, but nothing else. I am unsure of what is happening and I am scared.”

Ninjas going where?

*I am re-posting yesterday's snippet with some suggested edits as well as today's not very edited but in hope that people think this may work*

Ungracefully Jane flops fully to the floor tossing her skirts back behind her and her feet and legs under her. She sits up on the floor and looks at the figure who has spoken.

The woman, as now it is apparent that figure is a woman, has long straight black hair parted in the middle. Her skin is a warm fawn color. Her eyes are almond shaped and dark almost disappearing in her mirth. Her eyelashes are dark, thick and short. her face as a whole is more flat than Jane had ever seen before. She is very beautiful and her small mouth was smiling with laughter Jane expected was at her expense.

“I waiting for you,” the woman asked in her accent and odd english wording “I think I sleep too.”

“Where are we?” Asked Jane
“On Ship, name Cressy we are going to Canterbury in Zealand”
Jane stared at the woman. How could they be going to New Zealand. Is that what she really meant?
“Sorry, You are scared No? You are safe we lock door keep others out” She says and gesture to the locked door.
Jane just blinked at her. Finally after what seemed like a long time. Jane managed. “Do you mean New Zealand? Why are we going there?”
“Yes yes New Zealand. You father has sent for you.”

Ok just to have something today and to continue...

Prompts if need it...

These are comming out of my head probally influenced by things I have read and seen as of late

1) A modern fairy tale in 10 minutes

2)Descriptive peice about action or emotion with out naming the action or emotion. (from Holly's substitute English teacher)

3) A place filled witha million yodels.

4) Right or rite of passage.

Ninjas 3

*Ok I have started from the last line of yesterday.  Sorry for the funny typo*

Sitting on the other side of the room was a hunched figure in a black robe.

The figure’s face was down long dark hair hung forward hiding it’s face. The Black rob covered everything else. The figure swayed with the movement of the room. But did not stir from it’s position.

Unwinding her skirt from her knees she carefully sat up and adjusted he clothing for modesty and comfort. For warmth she tucked her feet under her, her corset was a different matter she could not completely adjust it without help and she would not ask a stranger She maybe able to take it off if she was alone. It took a lot to sit upright. Her seemingly minor injuries had begun to abate in pain and her head was only aching no longer a fierce pain. He mouth felt like she had been chewing on sheep’s  wool. She needed to get something to eat.

Surveying the room there was two cots with yellowed covering the one she sat on and the one the other did. A door that was shut and bolted on this side. A small chest with a wooden jar was against the wall opposite the door. A small dirty mirror was bolted to the wall above it. The ceiling was low and as dirty as the walls. She could see a small case under her roommates cot.

The pitching of the room was rhythmic and she was getting used to it. She decided to investigate a bit more she leaned forward to look under her cot. The movement sent her sliding, and she pitched off the cot into the small floor space. He feet and knees remained on the cot and her arms slid beneath it, her skirt flipped over her head. She let out a louder than intentioned gasp as her cheek hit the floor.

A small girlish giggle came from some where above her.

“So you awake now?” came an unexpected very accented feminine voice.

Ninja's 2

She could feel the world spinning. She must be ill. Under her face she could feel rough cloth covering what felt like rags. The uneven movement of the surface she was laying on and the ache of her head made her keep her eyes firmly shut. Her chest hurt. Taking a deep breath she realized that her corset was still on her although it had moved and a stay was jabbing into her chest. She began to take stock of how she felt. one foot was bare and the other had the stocking still on she could feel her skirts bunched up under her legs and wrapped tightly around her knees. her knuckles and fingers hurt, stinging slightly. Her hair was in her face, not braided as she would before bed. The surface below her was slightly padded but still uncomfortable.

She felt as if everything was pitching to and fro. Slowly she began to listen there was a creak of wood and metal, and an acrid smell of oil, smoke and salt.
She slowly lifted herself to a half sitting position the small moving room she was in was once painted white but now was dirty.
Sinning on the other side of the room was a hunched figure in a black robe.

Ninjas

*I couldn’t think of what should happen in my story next. So today I take a break.
But when I ask for haunting suggestion on Live Journal the most interesting response was “Ninjas!”
So in the interest of trying something totally different...*

It had been a long week she was sitting at the desk her hair wrapped up in a scarf as she was carefully filling in the columns  of the ledger. This was her job just entering in the numbers and adding and subtracting as they were to be.  She was not to make any judgements and was definitely not supposed to let her boss know when things didn’t add up that was his job to see on his own. It was not the place of a woman to know these things. But she did. There were problems and she knew that there was more than one set of books and she had been penning the real one.
The office was quiet except for the scratch of her pen. She could only come in to do the books after everyone else was gone. It was not proper to have a woman doing the books and she could care for her little brothers and sisters during the day and her mother could take over at night. After her father returned from the west indies things would go back to the way they were and then she could go to the dances again and maybe the young Mr. Smithe would notice her.
She set down her pen and rubbed her hand. In the extra silence she heard the sound of something sliding on the floor. As she turned to something passed by her eyes. Hitting the wall above her desk. She jumped and fell backwards into the wall next to her desk. Hitting her head she saw stars and closed her eyes.
There was more noise. Shuffling and possibly the padding of a small animal. Opening her eyes she saw standing next to the other side of her desk three dark figures. Her candle may have blown out. No they were wearing all black. even covering their heads. One steps forward and takes her chin roughly in his gloved hand. Although the pressure of his fingers is firmer than comfortable she marvels at the cool and unusual feel of the gloves’ material.
His eyes are an unusual shape through the mask he wears. She thinks he may be a chinaman as has been described in the papers she has been able to see and read.
he silently looks at the others and then picks her up and tosses her over his shoulder.
She feels her boot quickly removed and pressure placed on her foot and then a pinch in her ankle.
The man began to run but soon she finds herself loosing consciousness.

Parts one and two

*Here is the beginning of my story all strung together 254 words more than what was there yesterday. I have a hard part to write next. Some thing needs to happen I am not sure what though. So let me know what need to be fixed*

Finding
January was not the best time to look to buy a house but we wanted to find one before out lease ended in four months.

Every sunday was the same we would sit down and look through the paper for open houses. We had had one evening with a realtor who only showed us new houses that were too white inside to have any character. We wanted room and character we didn’t want new and shiny.

On this one Sunday we decided to just check out some neighborhood. see what was in them. We drove toward the schools. Thinking that we would see something there. Past the high-school we turned down a hill the lane was tree lined with a few houses along it with no sidewalks just big front yards. The variance between these house showed a lack of neighborhood plan and individuality. at the bottom of the hIll stood a colonial style house with a big bay window and a for sale sign. We stopped in the circle in front of it. and as we were deciding to get out and grab a flyer the relator came out with a open house sign.

Was this some sort of fate.

Rolling down the window I ask, “When does the open house start?”
“As soon as you all walk in the front door, ma’am”
“Ok then” we walk up the front walk it’s stone like cobbles interspersed with brick step was shorter than it appeared and very unique. Although the house was at the bottom of a hill it sat on a slight rise that made the front walk and the driveway steep although this is masked by the lay out of the driveway and the yard.

It had not snowed much so the yellow brown grass poked through the light dusting of snow and ice. The walkway and steps clear of most ice and snow except that which has drifted into the crakes between the cobbles and bricks making them more crisp and clean in it appearance. One could only imagine that it would be softened by moss and other detritus during the rest of the year.

The front door was a warm rich brown stained wood with a thin arched beveled and pebbled glass window in the center of it. It was behind all glass Storm door. The had a look of being new. But the color and style was a little older and more classic that much of what we had seen. to the left of the door and partially hidden by the well manicured yew bushes in from of the large porch was the bay window. I squeezed my husbands hand. It was more than I had seen from the street. There were no window coverings and  I can see into the front room It is a very large space, and empty.

Waking in I hear and feel the hardness of the wood floor. It is the dark finished floor of my dreams. Some one has sought to protect it’s finish in the entrance way with a small door mat. My husband set our daughter down on the floor. She cocks her three year old head to the side and fixes the realtor with a quizzical gaze.
“Is there a good back yard?” she asks
“Why yes sweetie shall we go look? It has a jungle gym”.
She walks us through the main floor telling us that he house is 25 years old and had  only 3 owners. The current owner lived here for only a year before failing health meant she had to move to supported living apartment. The house has been empty for 2 years and on the market for 18 months.

We walk through the house to the back. We see hard wood floors a den with a fireplace, A family room dining room and a spacious kitchen. All things that we had been looking for. She mentions the dark wood and how it could be updated. We exchange looks knowing that we don’t want to up date it we find warmth in the dark wood.

We quickly get to the double french doors to the back yard. The yard is spacious and bordered by trees. In the center is an elegant but obviously disused play structure. The swings have some rust on them.
Looking at my quizzical daughter I can see that she is pleased. she has pressed her face against one of the window pane of the door.
“Mommy and Daddy, This is the back yard I want. It’s just right” she says with assurance and determination.

We giggle at her and scoop her up. “Well lets look at the rest of the house and ask some other questions before we think more about it.” says my husband.

The realtor continues the tour and we see the three bedroom with a private bath room for the master bed room. The two other bedrooms lend them selves easily to what we have been wanting.

We take the literature and the realtors card. We walk out to the car. after putting our daughter in the car seat we look back at the house. I feel it must be fate that we found this house.
“She was watching us leave. I think she is desperate to sell the house.” my husband says.
“What do you mean?”
“I saw the curtains in the upstairs window flutter shut when we looked back at the house” he says while starting the car.
“If she is so desperate what do you think is wrong with it?”
“It’s too perfect for us.” he replied laughing as we drive up the hill.

*We go home we run the numbers and check out calendar. We call the realtor to set up another visit.
All the motions of buying a house. It all falls easily into place, almost too easily. In the end we set a March closing date.

Moving In
My right hand aches as we drive into the short but steep driveway. It is our drive way. The most painful part about buying a house is signing the papers on closing day. Reams and reams of papers. I have never been happier that I changed my name when I got married. Short was so much better today.
We turn and grin at each other. With our little girl in daycare and the day off we plan to spend the day alone in our new house. We press the button on the garage door opener and watch it open. although it has only been a couple hours since we last saw the garage it seems so much bigger.
The door from the garage into the house seems to swing closed.
“Did you see that?” I ask out loud.
“See what?” My Husband responds
“The door moved, like it just closed”
“It was probably just the change in air pressure with the garage door opening”
“Of course it was”
We park in the garage and get the mop and the bucket out of the trunk.
We walk to the door into the house from the garage. it is locked and the keys don’t seem to work.  We decide that it is better to go through the front door. We leave the cleaning supplies in the garage and walk to the front door. Grinning we unlock the door together and before I can protest my husband picks me up to carry me over the threshold. As he dose the March wind whips up and catches the screen door and swings into both of us. My feet find the front door and stop it as it starts to swing shut.
Laughing we push the door back and enter the house. It cold with out occupant the heat has been off or very low, and a midwestern spring brings snow and frigid temperatures. Neither of us can remember where the thermostat is. But as we will be working downstairs we decide we will turn on the gas fireplace.
We go to the den and turn on the fire place and is comes on with a high faint squeal. It is an unearthly noise that seem like a protest as the gas begins to flow through the pipes and ignite. The house is waking up and coming back to life having sat empty for several months. We hold our hands out towards the fire and the warmth from the blue flames behind the glass spread across our faces and hands.
We go about the house mopping the floors checking the faucets and the pipes. getting the cob webs down. putting any big spiders outside in the woods in the back. The wind makes the trees creak against each other and it seems like they welcome the spiders in a very eerie way.
After a few hours the house, although empty, feels warm and like it will be home. The movers will start tomorrow and it will be two days before we have all our stuff here from our apartment.
We go back to the car and get the sleeping bags, new shower curtains, floor lamps, and the few other thing we have brought over to make this place seem like ours.
We spread the sleeping bag on the floor and plug in the floor lamp in the den as it is getting darker. We have an hour before we need to pick up our daughter and head back to finish packing up the apartment.
The light and warmth of the fire flood the room with a romantic glow. We cuddle up on the sleeping bags looking at the fire and he begins to stroke my back. I turn to meet his kiss when there is a loud crash from up stairs.
We both jump up and run to the stairs. The mop and bucket have tipped over in the bathroom and the dirty mop water has spilled and is soaking into hall the carpet. We grab the few rags that we have and wring out the mop trying to soak up the water and stop the mess before it gets worse. Somehow we mange it but it has killed the romantic mood.
Once we get it cleaned up we realize it is time to go get our daughter and head back to the apartment for dinner. Turn off the fireplace and close up everything for the night. We leave the sleeping bag on the floor, It makes the room more feel more inviting and less empty.

The light of the day has dwindled into a pale evening. As we drive up the hill away from our newly purchased house the fine streaks of daylight in their oranges red and purples begin to embrace the sky. The moon is just visible in the grey sky. A full moon. My husband incline his head toward me.
“You know there was a couple times that I could have sworn the cats were already in the house today.” he says
“What do you mean”
“Well I’d see a tail, or something, disappearing around the corner but when the mop bucket tipped over I could have sworn I even heard cats scampering away.”
“Really?” Although I had some of the same feelings I don’t admit it. “Well, I bet you are just so used to cats being around that your brain is playing tricks on you. Seeing and hearing what you expect.”

We laugh about this and pull into the small parking lot to pick up our daughter. Her sweet 3-year-old face lights up to get both Mommy and Daddy picking her up.
“Do I have a backyard now Daddy?” She asks as she jumps up into his arms.
“Yes and we will go see it in the morning sweetie now we need to go back to our old place and get ready for the movers to come and get our stuff in the morning.”

Our apartment feels small and crowded especially after the large empty house. It is warmer and still feels firmly of home. Tonight is for packing and Pizza very little left to do.

The alarm goes off with extra urgency and very loudly. I open my eyes to see it’s face blurred barley 2 inches from the end of my nose. I takes me a moment to realize that I am sleeping on the mattress on the floor as everything else is stacked boxed and dismantled. the small box that the clock sits on is almost the same height as the mattress and I have curled up very close to the edge. I often try and get as close to the alarm clock as I can when the next morning is full of exiting promises. I slap the button on top of the clock giving the

My mind races through the day a head the movers are coming. We have so much to do. I can hear my husband still breathing the long relaxed breaths of sleep. The temptation to let him rest and stay in bed for the next hour rises in me but with the excitement of getting our belonging ensconced in out new home triumphs and I sit up putting my feet on the floor.

I feel the stiffness that has settled in from yesterday’s hard work. My right hand hurts the most. between washing down everything down and the signing of my name what felt like several hundred times. I massage my right hand relieving some of its ache but adding to the ache of the left. As I switch I marvel at how relieving pain can cause pain else where.

The morning is chilly for March. We have turned down the heat in the apartment to prepare for the mover to come and get our belongings for the short trek to our house.
I am perched on the arm of the couch holding an old mug full of hot tea trying to inhale the steam to warm me. My husband has taken out daughter to daycare for the morning. She didn’t want to go. But we have promised that as soon as the moving truck is at the house we will go get her. But for now I am waiting for them to arrive, alone. I breathe in the steam in soak up the quiet.
Surrounded by boxes. I cannot get comfortable or relax. Not that I really want to. I feel the pressure of time right now. I wan to leave this small crowded apartment. The packed and stacked boxes make the feeling more urgent and tight. The time although slowly moves my mug slowly cools and empties. I start to consider what I can stuff into my own car to start the move without needing to wait longer.
I slump back into the box behind me and sight loudly to break the silence.
“Hello, Ma’am” questions a voice, starling me. It has come from from the other side of the boxes I have slumped against on the couch. I sit up and peer over the box. A large burly man with a hand truck is standing in the open door way.
“Ummm Hi?” I enquire back.
“I’m Rick I’m from the Ver River Moving Company. You husband let me in. He said he was going down to the storage area. to get the bikes. I take it you were tired of waiting. I didn’t think we were late. My crew is outside.”
“Oh, No your not it is just the anticipation” I reply feeling the blush of embarrassment creep up my cheeks, “Ok, everything is labeled. Let me know If you have any questions. You can use the patio door if that will help.”
“So you bought ‘The House at the Bottom of the Hill’?” he says conversationally. “I was wondering is anyone would buy that place again.”
“What do you mean? Does the house have a history”
“Well I wouldn't say that. I t seems that when people buy it they don’t stay long but it sits empty for a while before it goes on the market. I don’t know why but that is what people have been talking about.”
“People talk about that house?” for some reason my heart has picked up speed and I have a pit forming in my stomach. Could our wonderful house be a problem? A lemon that no-one knows what to do with.
“Ma’am Don’t worry it is nothing bad. Everyone says it is a wonderful house. People just get sick or get transfered out of state no-one wants to give it up.”
Although I feel my momentary panic abate. I have a sinking feeling in the back of my brain some thing about doors, cats, and mop buckets. I need to get this show on the road.
I am able to se this conversation aside and discount it as my excitement begins to build as I watch the moving truck fill. So I will be able to watch it empty and my belonging fill my house.
“My house” what a wonderful thing to be able to say.
I don’t have time to think I don’t have time to fret. The truck is filled the apartment is empty the storage unit in the basement is empty. The cats are in the car time to pick up out daughter.
The real work is about to start.
I kiss my husband and he heads to speak with the moving guys before they drive over I want to pick up my daughter and get to the house before they do. I climb into my car and start my drive to pick up my daughter. As I do my mind begins to think through what all this really means and my excitement.
This is the day I have been dreaming of since my sweetheart was born. A back yard with a swing set. somewhere to run and climb. A fireplace to fuel those romantic moments. All this give me a great sense of excitement and I have to check my driving speed.
As I pull into the day care center, I can see the kids playing outside. I pull into the parking spot with full view of the playground and I sit. I can watch my daughter on the playground, I have a great view from where I sit.

She stands in the middle of everything on the play ground, her hands on her hips head cocked to onside. She is watching it all, soaking it up, and considering her options. She will choose what she can do. Her chubby cheeks and bright blue eyes show more thought than your average three-and-a-half-year-old.

Her wispy hair pokes out from the hack of  her pink fleece hat in a soft outward light brown curl. Bangs barely poke out of the front. The hat fastens under her chin. She is wearing a nubby dark bLue and Green fleece coat and pink boots the day is warm and dry enough though to skip the snow pants so you can see her white and Blue striped leggings and her blue and white striped dress.

A huge smile crosses her face and she runs for the two boys on the sleek wooden play structure. She swiftly climbs up and joins her friends chatting away with ease.
I get out of the car knowing that there is a good chance that as involved as she is with her friends she may be reluctant to leave.  As soon as I enter the playground she sees me and runs over.
“Are we moving in to the house now?” she loudly asks running at me full force.
“Yes we are sweetie” I answer.
“Hooray! I have a backyard can i go play there now?”
“Ok lets go!”
She waves good bye to her friends and runs out dragging me after her. I can feel my momentary unease leaving me. her enthusiasm washes over me and the joy on her face is infectious and I feel my face mirroring it and any tinge of gray in my mood has left.
We get in the car. The drive to the house is so short. Just a few blocks. We chat about walking and biking to day care in the summer on the short drive to the new house.
As we drive down the hill we can see the Moving van being opened and My husband’s car in the open garage.
My daughter is so exited that she is almost yelling from the back seat ”Hi house, hi daddy, hi moving guys!”

What I wrote yesterday..

*OK here is the little piece I wrote yesterday. It will bring part of the description of the girl in to it. In the end it will be much edited*

I don’t have time to think I don’t have time to fret. The truck is filled the apartment is empty the storage unit in the basement is empty. The cats are in the car time to pick up out daughter.
The real work is about to start.

Another bit of the same story

*I am too tired to link where this fits, it is a continuation from where the realtor starts to take them back to see the back yard. I wrote this today I actually had to find a floor plan to help me think *

We walk through the house to the back. We see hard wood floors a den with a fireplace, A family room dining room and a spacious kitchen. All things that we had been looking for. A different point of view...

*I realized that I needed a look at one of the character in my story one that needed some exploration. So I have explores a bit and given this character some history. But I am not giving it all away. Enjoy.*

Mama left me here. I woke up one night and she was gone. They took my toys and everything in my nursery. The whole house was empty. I don’t know why she left all she ever wanted was me for years she told me that and now she left me. I am lonely I want my mama.
I wander the house I am not big enough to open the doors. Mama told me when I was big enough I could play on the jungle-gym out side and swing on the swings. We had plans so many plans. Why did mama go?

Soon a new mommy comes with a new daddy and two sweet kids. But is not me they want. They talk a lot about how things would be good if the new daddy got a special job. A new place far away. The hopes and wishes soon come. They leave as quickly as they came.

Again I am alone, I want my mama. The house is empty. I am lonely. I like the bathroom the best so I spend my time here a lot I play with water and I dance in the tub.

After a long while people visit no one I like the come and go never staying more than a moment or 2. After months of this she comes. She is lonely too. I call her grandma and she talks a bit to me. She likes me but she wants grandpa. He is gone and she hope that she can see him again. I don’t understand what she means. But she is alone and wants to be with people like her soon it is time for her to live with people like her. The man who calls her Mom come and gets her and takes her to a new home.

I am alone. A woman come and sits in the house every so often. She doesn't see me or hear me mostly she is alone.

One day three people come in with her one is a little girl she is like me. She is little and her Mommy loves her best of all.

“Is there a good back yard?” she asks
“Why yes sweetie shall we go look? It has a jungle gym” says the woman.

She leads the little girl and he Mommy and Daddy through my house to my backyard to the swing set my mama said was for me.

The Mommy and the daddy want this house to be their house and the woman wants them to have it.  I am not so sure I like them in my house.

The Begining...

*Here is what I wrote yesterday. And yes there is an odd throw-away line at the end. But in case you didn't know I have a 200 words a day goal for November and my Mini-NaNoWriMo
This is kind of the start the first view of the house and yes way fluff with out substance*

Moving part 1 (or one of many parts to the ghost story)

* OK here is another part to the story one with a bit of the zinger but not too much other action*

Describing the girl

*I am not completely happy with this as a stand alone or as a part of the bigger piece as it stands but it helps I hope maybe it will become part of the story in the end in fragment here and there*

Quite time in the classroom she is sitting at a table with a book slowly examining each page as she quietly flips through it. Part 2 (Day 1 MiniNaNo)

This is continued from here.
