Creative or Not you be the judge.

I have been feeling a bit uncreative lately. In sending my darling tween-age daughter off to bed this came out of my mouth:

Brush your teeth, go to bed.
Brush your hair, stand on your head.

Guess what she was paying attention and I had to repeat it and explain it to her.

Very Rough Plans...

Nothing ever goes according to plans.

A phrase I have learned to live by.

When I was younger it meant that I would plan and the people around me would operate their own plans and I would feel left out or let down. There was the move to the UK which left me unable to get my Drivers license at 16.  The boys who broke my heart just before we were to attend the big event. The friends that couldn’t get me to where I needed to go after they offered or agreed when I asked. Having found my way through this string of disappointment I made it through the teenage years and college.

I took charge of my life pursued what I wanted including asking the man of my dreams to marry me.

I made the decision of when to have our first child presenting the pros and cons of waiting.

She arrived almost on schedule she just took her own sweet time, And after 36 hours of labour that included two hours harder labour than expected. Once I held her in my arms it slowly dawned on me that the years I had spent getting things to go according to plan were now over.

Children do that to you from throwing up in and all over the car on the way to a friends wedding. The displays of stubbornness right before leaving for preschool on the only day you have ever had an appointment during that hour.

After five years a second less planned child who demands schedule and planning, but he wants it his way.

He needs it his way not mine and I am there to help him to know that things never go according to plan unless you work extra hard and alone. It is not fun that way so he wll learn that plans are just an outline of what one want to do.

An egg in a box.

At the end of Thing-A-Day (wow did that end only 3 weeks ago?) A friend and fellow participant posted this challenge:

"Send me instructions how to make something impossible, imaginary, not yet invented. Extra appreciation for detailed drawings/diagrams on graph paper."

So this is what I am starting with I think I will include pictures and an egg in a box at end. Maybe a pretty one. I missed his 41st Birthday after all.

How to safely mail an egg in a box.

Materials:

Long thin box
Egg
Packing peanuts or other cushioning packing material.
Packing Tape
Scissors/Box cutter/knife
Ruler
Pen or pencil
Postage and address

Method

1. Wrap the egg in packing material to cushion it. The more the better.
2. Place wrapped egg on surface an measure height of egg from surface to top of wrapping.
3. Place wrapped egg into one of the small ends of box.
4. Tape that end of the box shut.
5. Measure end of box with egg toward other end to make the height of egg plus ½ an inch. Draw a line around the box at this point
6. Cut box on three sides at the line . Create a flap by opening up the empty end.
7. Fold flap over now open box.
8. Trim flap to half an inch beyond the box.
9. Trim the over lapping flaps in such a manner so that they can fold neatly over the edge of the box.
10. Tape securely shut.
11. Weigh, address and apply postage to box.
12.Give to you postal carrier.

Old fear and new fearlessness

“Before we go to Culver's I need to got to the bathroom” I stated to my daughter one of the more understatedly dressed girls in the room filled with parents and girls from the choir.
“We can go out that door” gestured my daughter. I felt relived that she was indicating she would go with me the thought of going into a High School bathroom filled with middle-school age girl frightened me.

There were not many girls in the bathroom when we arrived. They gave me a quick glance and I saw in their eyes a note of trepidation. I was the grown up in the room and that thought was funny to me. If I did not have to pee as much as I did I would have laughed. I listened to them from inside the stall give each other dressing tips and make up tips. It was funny to see these girl young enough to be mine  talking and doing things that I did 28-30 years ago. Their presence still stirred a note of fear in the pit of my stomach. I waited for the talk to drift out the door before I left my stall surprised to find my daughter outside washing her hands already.

When we pulled in to the Culver’s lot we noticed a number of the same girls already there as well as some of the boys. More were in side their parents scattered around the restaurant sitting at the less full tables. We were joined by the mother. We chatted about her daughters and frequently looked for hers and were interrupted by the screams of young teen age girl. We confessed how we found these groups of girl intimidating. Funny how at 40 we find 13-year-old girls scary. Was our experience so dreadful that we fear them or fear for our daughter? It is hard to say and I am not wanting to spend enough time with them to find out.

My daughter a young one at 11 still wants to be with her Mom and joined in the conversation. She was not bothered by the girls screaming and running about but she sees this every day. I admire her fearlessness and hope that my fear does not interfere with it.

Extending on one minute....

From The One-Minute Writer:
Education: Describe, in a minute, the ideal education for children in 2010.
In one minute I came up with:
I heard something about education the other day. “we are educating children to day to work with things that have yet to be invented.” To make the ideal education with this in mind children need to be exposed and presented with the most up to date technology we have. Unfortunately in this country children are not considered important enough to be given that. Such a sad dichotomy.

After one minute more thoughts came to mind:
At the same time children should be taught history. Because without a foundation of history we are doomed to repeat it’s mistakes. But there needs to be a strong sense of the basic of reading writing and math, because all other subjects grow out of those.

Each person learns in a slightly different manner so education needs to be flexible and adjustable to each and every learner.

It feels late and I admonish my self that the excess but important medicinal caffeine late last night makes it feel that way.
It isn’t late not really we just changed the clock and I should not have adjusted. Many things are making me tired.
I am determined to get back to it.
Getting my fingers typing better again. They feel clumsy and awkward right now. Some will pass soon as they feel puffy with the weather change.
I have such wonderful ideas as I drive around but by the time I have a moment to write they are gone. The blank page laughing at me.

For the first time in a few weeks I have a huge chunk of day to write tomorrow, to knit and to plan. Maybe even edit.

But for now I need to sleep and or make a grocery list.
