The End of the World

I stood and began to take stock of what I had. Two quilts a t-shirt and shorts and one shoe. I knew that I couldn’t get any where easily with one shoe. I could see shards of glass all around. And there sticking out of a pile of rubble was the distinctive purple of the jacket that both my daughter and I had. If it was mine may be I would find more contents of my closet. Indeed there was some clothing from my closet along with the jacket 3 unmatched shoes, a pair of my husbands jeans, a belt and a large gold scarf.

Digging some more through the rubble I was able to find a few keepsake picture of my family one of the bears my mother had made for one of my kids and my daughter’s knitting project. The useful items were an old backpack with a faulty zipper, a roll of duct tape and a can of kidney beans, and my favorite thermal mug with the sealable lid.

The Duct tape felt like the biggest win. I had hoped for some more survival tolls my son had a collection of compasses and swiss army knives that I wish I had found one of, or one of the many hats we had had but I knew as I walked I would find other useful things.    At least of the mismatched shoes I had two that were similar enough to be functional and I could make the clothing work. I packed up what I had found and using my knowledge of the area headed toward the first place I could think of to get some more supplies, the Super Target.

It took a little bit but I was able to begin to see familiar landmarks through the rubble. The garden center provided a walking stick. It was some sort of shovel handle but was the right length and sturdy enough to help with poking through rubble and helping to make sure that the ground was solid in front of me.

The hill that led up to the super target worried me as much of it was man made and I was worried that some of what had happened was an earthquake that would disturb the construction.

  1. This is a good continuation. I don't know how I missed seeing it until today. You should have said soemthing!

Just something to think about: You used he word pulverized in the first part. I had a hard time equating the scene and size of the rubble and fact that there were intact belongings with that description.
